Rats and hibernation

You might be aware of the hibernate key on your PC and you know what it does. Hibernation is the cessation of activity during the winter and slowing down of metabolism in some animals. Rats are, however, no parts of these animals. Rats stay active all round year long. They do not hibernate and will rather utilize shelters available around. The cold winter will only push them away from their natural home but not out of activity. The need for steady and regular food drives them to stay active year long.

A rat's activity might be slowed down due to the cold weather. Like the Japanese beetles who move downward into the soil, rats have developed means to find warmth, food and shelter during the winter. Well, unlike other terrestrial animals, rats use the low temperature as a leverage to enjoy warmth and food that other animals might enjoy. Your "hospitable" home is probably their first call. As mammals, they need to keep a fairly warm body temperature. How a rat gets into your home, why it chose your home and others will be discussed in this article.

Your home is not just hospitable because it offers warmth and food. It also offers another incentive: a nesting ground in the winter. A messy home, garage and garden are all welcoming places for rats. Piles of cleared grasses, debris provides a good excuse to find way into your home. Spillover of foods in your surroundings sends out a false information to rats; you have more than enough for them to feed on (which you might actually not have). Littered bird and dog feeds, access to entry ports such as broken windows and doors are other avenues for rats in your home.

Rats will do a lot to leave the natural cold world into your home, don't allow them in. In their quest to find a place to stay in your home, they will stay in almost anywhere in your home: attic, basement, kitchen and garage. Since your home comes with an undeniable comfortability, interior housing is at the greatest risk of rat infestation. Space areas will also be utilized as they are good hiding places. Driving regularly during the winter is not assured, rats might live in engine compartments and ventilation systems. Seat cushions and clothing will be used as nests. You know what that means for your car.

Rats living in the wilderness and unable to travel to the comfort of a good home find homes in caves. In the summer, they stack up foods in caves and dig into during the winter. Unable to find a home and caves, rats have adapted to burrowing into rocks. With spacing less than 0.6 inches wide, no den is too small for these critters. You can prevent them from getting into your home by being inhospitable. Seal off entry ports to prevent easy access. Clean your garage, kitchen, attic and garden regularly. Eliminate potential signs of food. Take rapid steps before winter to ensure no rat is welcomed into your home. Your home should be a safe haven for you and your family, not for rats.
